The Complete Alfred Cheney Johnston Collection At The Library Of Congress Review

Not many people know that famed Ziegfeld photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston, before his death, donated 245 of his beautiful images to the Library Of Congress in Washington D.C. For over 35 years they have been filed away at the Library with very few people aware of his collection other than a handful of researchers.

ACJ's first choice to donate his work to was the Museum of Modern Art in New York City but his offer was turned down by Edward Stiechen who was the Curator of Photography at the time. Stiechen and Alfred Cheney Johnston were contemporaries of each other in the field of Photography but they were not friends.

So Cheney contacted the Library of Congress and the curators there were thrilled to recieve the Alfred Cheney Johnston Collection.
